Letter to the editor: Edina incumbents serve city well

To the Editor:

This coming election is an important one for the city of Edina. I have lived here 17 years. During that time, my daughter attended our wonderful school system, beginning with French Immersion and graduating from EHS in 2020. During that time, I have paid attention to city government and have interacted with the Mayor and every City Council. The three incumbents are some of the most engaged and qualified people I have had the pleasure of working with and I urge you to vote to reelect James Pierce, Carolyn Jackson and Mayor James Hovland.

James Pierce is always up for a conversation about our community. I know him to be a respectful and engaged community leader. He listens to both understand differing viewpoints and to bridge divides. One of my favorite quotes is from John Stuart Mill: “He that only knows one side doesn’t know much of that.” James takes the time to understand both sides.

Carolyn Jackson has always been a community leader. Her background in law and finance makes her an excellent steward for this city. She also raised her family here while holding numerous community positions. Her tireless work for racial equality, voting rights, women’s rights and workers’ rights are in line with our city’s values. Carolyn and I have worked through more than one issue where we started out in different places but have come together to make something better.

Mayor Hovland cares about the people who live and work here. He understands what is needed to keep this community thriving while maintaining the wonderful friendly feeling this community has. His background in law, decades of creating policy with the city and his standing both in the region and nationally enhance our city.

The past several years has made some of our current decisions about climate and equity difficult to make, but by continuing to learn together, grow together and respect one another, we can move forward. I believe in these three candidates.

Please watch the LWVE candidate forums Sept. 9 to learn more.
